Introducing Oita
|
When you first received your placement letter, one of the things you may have thought is 'where's that???'. Even in Japan this isn't an uncommon reaction until you mention some of Oita's most popular tourist destinations like Beppu and Yufuin. What are these towns famous for? Well, these towns are most well known for their onsen (hotsprings). Which is unsurprising as Oita's tagline is 温泉県おおいた, or 'Hotspring prefecture, Oita'. Oita not only boasts the most hotspring locations throughout Japan, we also have access to a wide variety of different types, including volcanic sand, mud, steam and more. To find out more about onsen click here.

Beyond onsen, Oita is home to numerous historic sites from designated National Treasures like the Usuki Stone Buddhas, Fuki Temple (Fuki-ji) and Usa Shrine (Usa Hachiman Jingu) to castles and castle ruins like Nakatsu Castle, Kitsuki Castle, the Oka Castle ruins and the Funai Castle ruins. Not to mention our various historic town districts like Hita's Mameda Town and Kitsuki's samurai and merchant residences. As well as more recent history in Showa Town (Showa no machi) in Bungo-takada. If you're interested in finding out more click here,
We also have huge variety in Oita's famous foods - including Dango soup (dango jiro), shiitake mushrooms as well as a variety of seafood and chicken dishes. Not to mention in addition to the Sapporo Beer Factory, as the southernmost Sake brewing point and the northernmost Shochu brewing point Oita has a great range of alcohol options too. Find out what's great to eat here.
The Explore Oita section of the website should help provide some information to get you started and hopefully give you some ideas of things you'd like to experience once you arrive.
