Kijima Kogen is a 25-hectare amusement park with around 38 amusements and rides located in the countryside of Beppu. It is most famous for Jupiter, its 1,600 metre long and up to 42 metre high wooden roller coaster (the first in the country!), where the cars reach speeds of up to 91 kilometres per hour. Its steep drops and twisting course should give any rollercoaster fan an exhilarating ride!
As well as Jupiter, there is also Poseidon - a water ride with a 30 metre drop, and also a drop tower, a pendulum ride, and an arctic experience building where you can walk through wintery scenes that feel like going through a walk-in freezer. Other features of the park include a carousel, ferris wheel, go-karts, childrens' rides, an 18-hole putting course, and a train.
In the summer, the park also has a large pool area, which is then transformed into an ice rink during the winter (from late November until early March).
Please note that entry to the park and the actual wristband for the rides are separate charges. The park sometimes gives out coupons for free entry to local residents, but even with this you still have to buy the wristband to be able to go on the rides (and likewise you also still need to pay for ice skate rental if you get free entry to the park for ice skating).
