Umitamago is the largest aquarium in Oita Prefecture, located between Beppu and Oita City along the sea road.
Its most notable feature is a 61m walk-around viewing tank and viewing tunnel, as well as a plethora of daily marine performances by dolphins, walruses, seals, pelicans, and sea otters It also has areas where you can stroke rays, hold sea cucumbers and starfish, and watch the fish and other animals being fed by the staff, as well as a restaurant where you can get food for yourself too! The aquarium is also almost exactly opposite Takasakiyama, home to the nature reserve where two large clans of Japanese macaques are living. * You even can get a combined ticket which includes the return bus trip to and from the aquarium and nature reserve, as well as entry for both attractions! (it can be bought at Beppu train station's information desk and possibly also at Wander Compass). |
