Horan Enya : Fishermans' Festival

Description:
​​This festival is for fisherman to pray for safety at sea and large catches. It features men in loincloths sailing a decorated boat first from the shore of Isomachi around the Katsura river where they worship at Kotohira-gu Shrine before rowing to Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine. At this point men dive out of the boat and swim to shore.

Gaman Taikai

Description:
The Gaman Taikai is a winter endurance competition that features events such as; a shaved ice eating competition, "snow darts", soumen eating competition, the needlework of hell (soaking your hands in ice water and then threading a needle), and the ice pillars (where the competitor holds on to a large block of ice with their bare hands and feet for as long as possible).

Hiji Curry Rally

Description:
​​​The Hiji Curry Rally is a stamp rally that aims to promote Hiji's 'castle curry'. By eating curry at the participating restaurants you receive stamps, and when you have gathered enough stamps you can receive a 'grand prize'.

​​​​During this time, traditional Hina Matsuri dolls are displayed at more than 30 locations throughout Hiji. Activities and events are also held, as is a stamp rally.

Hina Doll Tour, Usuki
When: Mid February to Late March

Description:
During this time, paper Hina Matsuri dolls are displayed at 4 main locations in Usuki. These dolls differ from other Hina Matsuri dolls as they are made out of decorated paper. This seems to be due to historical prohibitions on Hina dolls that have occured in Usuki's history.

​​​​This festival is to pray for a good harvest and a disease free life. It includes a performance of a red demon and black demon wielding torches.

​​​​During this time, traditional Hina Matsuri dolls are displayed at around 20 locations throughout Hita. Other spring festivals and events will be held throughout this time including the Hita Oyama Plum Festival and the Tenryo Hita Health Marathon among others.

Description:
​​​​During this time, traditional Hina Matsuri dolls are displayed at 30 locations throughout Kitsuki. Activities and events are also held at this time and some local restaurants will have a special Hina menu. There is also a stamp rally.
Many of the dolls are displayed at the samurai and merchant houses in Kitsuki. Discounted entry to these houses is available when you dress in Kimono and there is a Kimono rental service in Kitsuki.  ​​​​

Beppu Hatto Hot Spring Festival (Including Fire Festival)

Description:
The Beppu Hatto Hot Spring Festival kicks off with the fire festival where they set fire to one of Beppu's mountains. During this time many hot springs (onsen) are free of charge and thanksgiving events are held. This event falls around the 1st of April.

Awashima Park Flower Festival

​​​​​This event is held at Awashima Shrine (a shrine for the god of marriages) when sakura and rapeseed blossoms bloom in the shrine. There are taiko performances, performances from local schools and local produce on sale.

Oka Castle Cherry Blossom Festival

Description:
The main event of the festival is a Daimyo parade to the castle, surrounded by cherry blossom trees.

Onta Pottery Festival (Onta-yaki Mentousai) Spring

Description:
​​​Hita ​​​Onta pottery is famous in Japan, and is made using century old techniques with no modern machinery. There are ten families that make Onta pottery.
​Twice a year in Spring and Autumn the Onta Pottery Festival (Onta-yaki Mentousai) is held where the pottery is sold at reduced prices.  
​
Kitsuki Castle Festival 
 When: Early May
Dates: 5 May - 6 May 2017

​​​​​​This festival is held at the beginning of May during Golden Week and includes many historically themed activities and events including a parade, flower arrangement and Kabuki.

Shiroshita Karei Festival

Description:
​​​​​​This festival is held in Hiji and features Shiroshita Karei, a type of flounder found in Hiji. Other events are held throughout the day, including outdoor tea ceremonies, walking tours and more before culminating in a fireworks display in the evening. 

Hita Kawabiraki Tourism Festival (Hita Kankousai)
When: Mid July

This fireworks festival is held over two nights and is to celebrate the beginning of the fishing season.

Taketa Ice-cream Rally

​​​​​​The Taketa Ice-cream rally is held across summer with 18 stores participating throughout Taketa city. Participants who collect all 18 stamps become Taketa Ice-cream ambassadors - however rewards exist at 2 stamps and 6 stamps as well. From more usual flavours like strawberry to the more unusual flavours like wine (in alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties), ramune, tomato and brown rice there's definitely new flavours to try. Past years have also included more bizarre flavours such as turtle.  ​
Tsukumi Minato Festival (Tsukimi Port Festival)

Description:
This is a fireworks festival held over two nights at the Tsukumi port. It is one of the largest fireworks displays in Kyushu.

Usuki Gion Festival

​​​​​​This festival has been held since 1643 and features two processions enshrining three Shinto deities and two parade floats.

Hita Gion Festival

Description:
​​​​​​The Hita Gion festival has over 300 years of history. The aim of the festival is to invoke health and safety from natural disasters. Ornamental parade floats are carried through town. During the night procession these floats are lit by lanterns. 

Nakatsu Gion Festival

Description:
​​​​​​The Nakatsu Gion festival has over 580 years of history, and features 12 Gion carts with dancers and 2 festival floats. 

Tenjin Festival

Description:
​​​​​​This festival has over 300 years of history and is one of Kitsuki's largest festivals. On the final night of the festival the floats are pitted against one another in a dramatic battle.

Beppu Hi no Umi Festival (Beppu Early Summer Festival/Ocean Fire Festival)

Description:
This festival features a bon dance (bon odori), yatai street vendors and a large fireworks display. It is one of Beppu's most iconic summer events.

Usa Mikoshi Festival (Usa Summer Festival)

Description:
This is the largest festival hosted by Usa Jingu Shrine and involves a procession of mikoshi floats enshrining three Shinto deities around the neighbourhood surrounding the shrine. Earlier processions include elementary school age children carrying smaller mikoshi while later processions involve adult groups carrying full sized mikoshi. 



August

Description:
​​​​​​Oita city's shopping and restaurant district receives a Tanabata makeover with events being held in the main festival square. The Oita Tanabata festival includes Funai Pacchin, Chikirin Bayashi dance, Taiko drumming and more. 

Kamegawa Summer Festival

Himeshima Bon Odori (Hime Island Bon Dance)

Description:
​​​​​​This festival features various forms of traditional Bon Odori dancing, including Kitsune Odori (performed by children), Aya Odori, Zendaiko, Sarumandayuu, Tanuki Odori as well as one new dance style that is created and performed each year.

Tsukumi Traditional Fan Dance

Description:
The Tsukumi fan dance has a 450 year history and it is said to contrast the traditional graceful fan dance movements with a courageous depiction of war.

Stone Buddha Fire Festival

Description:
This festival is held to celebrate the Stone Buddhas in Usuki, which are Japanese National Treasures. In the past, high school students have also provided free tours of the stone Buddhas in English, allowing you to learn more about their cultural and historical importance. In the evening torches are lit to offer thanks, and bon odori dancing and food stalls are available.   


September

One of the best chances to sample one of Oita's most popular specialities - Karaage (fried chicken). With over 60 speciality shops from Nakatsu and Usa this is a great way to get your fried chicken fix. In past years a special, limited fried chicken ice-cream has also been available - however it sells out fast!

Ajimu Wine Festival

Paper lanterns are lit along the stone paved paths around the historic samurai and merchant houses. During the festival tea ceremonies are also held at various residences and traditional music can be heard. There is also live music and food stalls.

Eat Beef and Scream (Eat Beef and Shout!)

Description:
This annual competition allows you to eat beef, and then scream/shout your message to the crowd in order to win a prize. Prizes are awarded based on volume, message and amusement factor - from marriage proposals to anime quotes and more. However there are only 100 participants, so if you want to participate register early and good luck!

Kebesu Festival

Description:
The festival involves a fire battle between a strange masked creature called a Kebesu and another in a white shroud called a Touba. The Kebesu tries to charge into the fire while the Touba prevents this from happening. It is believed that 
it brings good health when a spectator is hit by sparks from the fire.

Sanko Cosmos Festival

Description:
Cosmos flowers bloom as far as the eye can see including 'Cosmos art' where patterns and characters have been created using the colours of the cosmos flowers. There are around 30 million flowers across 16 hectares. 
Throughout the event local store owners will sell regional agricultural products and there will be stage events on the weekend and holidays.

​​​​​​The Oita International Wheelchair Marathon was the world's first independent international wheelchair competition. It is now an official event of the International Paralympic Committee, and is one of the largest wheelchair marathons in the world.

Description:
The Hita Tenryo festival recreates the Hita region from the Edo period when the town flourished under the control of the Shogunate. The event features traditional folk art performances and a Gundai representative procession.

Hita Sennen Akari Festival

Description:
​​​​​​Around 30,000 lanterns are lit along the Mamedamachi and Kagetsu river areas. The Mamedamachi district hosts various events and concerts during this period.

Wakamiya Hachiman Naked Festival

Description:
One of the three largest semi-nude Shinto festivals in Japan. Men in fundoshi loincloths carry a festive float across a freezing river as a 15 metre, 5 tonne torch (the largest in the country) is set on fire.

Oonogawa Battle Festival

Description:
Based on a historical battle the festival features Samurai processions, a cavalry unit, an artillery unit, an archery unit, the hand scroll of the battle, as well as horse archers.

Taketa Bamboo Festival

​​​​​​Over 20,000 bamboo lanterns are lit from dusk in the old castle town area of Taketa. This event also features live music and street stalls. 

December

Shimanawa Rope Tying (Sacred Straw Rope Tying)

Description:
You can join local residents and help make the longest shimenawa (sacred straw rope) in Japan. Every year the old rope is burnt and the new rope is made from scratch with the help of hundreds of volunteers. Local residents gather at Saiki's Bungo Futamigaura (a set of stone sacred rocks overlooking the sea which is said to represent a married couple). When completed the rope measures 65 metres and weighs two tonnes. After registering (which costs a small fee) you receive a piece of paper that you write your wish on, before it is woven into the rope.

Hiji Curry Rally

​​​The Hiji Curry Rally is a stamp rally that aims to promote Hiji's 'castle curry'. By eating curry at the participating restaurants you receive stamps, and when you have gathered enough stamps you can receive a 'grand prize'.
