Remnants of the Hiji Castle can be seen along Beppu Bay, but are occupied by more modern buildings. They are a short walk away from Hiji City Hall. Hiji is also known for a local delicacy called shiroshita karei (城下カレイ), a type of flounder that is found close to underwater vents by the Hiji Castle ruins. Although they can be ordered at a handful of restaurants in central Hiji, they are very expensive.
