Onsen-ken oita
Oita is the onsen (hotsprings) capital of Japan, not only by sheer numbers, but also in variety and accessibility. Beppu being the most prolific having over 2,900 hot spring vents. Ranging from typical thermal springs, to sulphate springs, volcanic sand and more you can also choose from privately rented onsen, mixed bathing (both with swimwear and without) and gender separated bathing. Since onsen are naturally heated and often contain minerals that are believed to have various health properties, visiting onsen is considered to be great for your health.
Experiencing this part of Japanese culture is highly recommended - and with the variety that Oita offers you should hopefully find something that works for you. You can click on the links below to learn more or find onsen near you by using our onsen map.

Also if you have any doubt of Oita's love for onsen - included below is one of Oita's promotional videos - although please note, synchronized swimming and excessive splashing is not a usual feature of onsen culture.
