The southernmost city in Oita prefecture, Saiki is a sleepy seaside city which boasts impressively fresh fish, delicious sushi, friendly people and beautiful scenery.
The area that is defined as Saiki is an amalgamation of a lot of smaller townships and villages that have been absorbed to form one large principal area named after its main city. Due to the breadth of the area, each town or village is still called by its original name and regarded as its own distinct community. |
As of 2015 there is only one JET stationed in Saiki, teaching SHS at the two schools in Saiki city: Shin Hounan and Kakujyo. JHS/ES are attended to by ALTs hired independently by the Saiki BOE. Although teacher’s housing may be available, JETs have traditionally preferred to find private housing (unsubsidized). Previous JETs have used buses, bicycles, walking or cars to get to their schools depending on preference and distance of the schools from their living locations. Around Saiki city itself walking is a convenient option while having a bicycle is a great friend, but to get to the farther areas a car is advisable.

Sushi
With good reason, Saiki is famous for its delicious fresh fish, especially when served as sushi. A fish dinner in Saiki can go from quite affordable to laughably expensive, so be sure to check the price before you choose a sushi shop to dine at. More restaurants can be found in our map. Locals recommend the cake shops and ichigo daifuku at Umeda! |
