Senior high school education (often referred to simply as high school) is not compulsory in Japan, though a large portion of students choose to attend. Students normally have to take an entrance exam to enter the school of their choice. High school in Japan, like junior high, is three years long. Students will usually begin high school at 14 or 15 years old, and graduate at 17 or 18 years old.
High schools have school uniforms, often in a blazer style. Typically there is no school lunch; instead, students bring their own lunch box (bento) or buy their lunch at the school cafeteria. However, students are typically still responsible for cleaning the school.
Many high school students are involved in club activities, such as sports, academic, or cultural clubs.
High schools sometimes have specializations, and it is not unusual for schools to be famous for specific subjects. For example, a high school maybe considered one of the top schools for English, science, etc. in the prefecture. There are also schools that specialize in specific fields like, agriculture, technology, or fine arts.
