Elementary or primary schooling in Japan is compulsory and takes six years. Students usually attend the primary school closest to their home.
Elementary school students do not normally have a uniform. However they will have a sports uniform, and when travelling to and from school will wear a high visibility yellow hat. Elementary school students are also famous for their 'Randoseru' - a distinctive leather backpack that is unique to elementary school students in Japan.
